A $125 painting adorns one of the walls at Haire’s Gulf Shrimp, a takeout spot in Chicago that makes what some consider the city’s best fried shrimp. In the image, Nelson Mandela, Dr. King and Malcolm X sit, while President @Barack Obama stands over them with a wistful smile. It’s hokey but meaningful to the owner, Finnie Haire, who @whittensabbatini photographed here with the painting. “I wanted people to see I was standing for the cause. All the people in picture were for blacks. It means a lot to me,” Finnie told #NYTOpinion. When voters first sent #BarackObama to the White House, an explosion of T-shirts and kitschy wares could be bought all over Chicago’s South Side. The city’s pride was palpable, and 8 years later, can still be seen on display at businesses like Haire’s. #NYTOpinion asks: Do you have Obama mementos on display? Share your own photo with the hashtag #ObamaMementos.
