Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mountain hare leveret – I have spent the last 15 years working with mountain hares and I never tire of their character and their charm. Not only are they a remarkably confiding animal with which you can build a seemingly unequalled level of trust but they also seem to be astonishingly quirky. Whether it’s the mountain hares of the Peak District, where this image was captured, or the mountain hares of the Scottish mountains, they share the same unique character traits. One of these unusual quirks is actually being demonstrated in this image, though it might not be immediately apparent. The quirk is that, even though I had spent several hours sitting close to this hare, walking with the hare as it explores its moorland home, and having the hare wander to within a few feet of me, so close in fact that I was no longer able to focus my lens, every now and again the hare would stop and look at me like I’d just beamed down from another planet. It was like he’d never seen me before and that my presence was, whilst not being unduly alarming, a shock nonetheless. I’ve never had a hare run away in this situation but it has always fascinated as to what exactly is going on in their head at this moment. Photographically of course it is an extremely useful quirk for them to have as we photographers often seek images such as these, where the ears are fully erect, the eyes bright, wide and alert. The look only ever lasts for a few moments and then the hare returns to its indifferent feeding but, for those of you that might be interested, this is what a hare looks like when it’s having one of those moments.
