Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mute swan in full threat posture – One of my favourite times of the year for photographing mute swans in undoubtedly when they are starting to drive last years’ offspring away, in preparation for the arrival of the new breeding season. The adults, in particular the male, starts to ratchet up the pressure months in advance and they start to display occasional signs of aggression. First in line is usually the male cygnets and they become separated from the family group weeks in advance, the females allowed to stay within the family group for several more weeks. Soon though the males attention will turn to them and they are treated to more and more aggression, much to their bewilderment and confusion. It can be quite a challenging thing to witness as the lives of the young cygnets depends entirely on them getting the message and leaving the territory. If they don’t, the parents that for 8-10 months nurtured and protected them will eventually kill them. Last year on one of the lakes where I work I actually had to intervene as one cygnet just wasn’t getting the message and just kept flying up and down the lake with the male in furious pursuit. In the end the male trapped the cygnet in a reed-bed so the cygnet just played dead and whilst I completely understand the ‘no interference’ rule there was absolutely zero point me standing by and watching the cygnet get killed. Even though it might have been a dramatic behaviour to photograph, and might have been vitally important to me in selling a story on which I’ve worked for 3 years, photographing it never even crossed my mind. I politely encouraged the male to extricate himself off the top of his cygnet and the cygnet, who’d finally got the message, left the lake immediately.
