Takeover by @noah_postwar - Our cover lot, Karel Appel’s "Eyes Like Heads" from 1964, is a quintessential oil painting by one of the founding members of Cobra, the hugely influential European avant-garde movement. Halos of red and orange swirl around deep blue, purple and green spheres, all floating in a cacophonous sea of frenetic brushstrokes and vivid waves of colors. The Cobra movement was recently celebrated in an important and critically acclaimed 2015 exhibition organized by Alison Gingeras at Blum & Poe, while Appel’s paintings and sculpture were the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the Phillips Collection this year. It’s hard not to get lost in this painting and I look forward to getting lost in it as many times as I can before the close of our exhibition.
