Noah Davis @noah_postwar here!
Measuring under just three inches in height, Richard Pettibone’s Andy Warhol, Marilyn Monroe is a gem-like example of the artist’s audacious output of the 1970s. Pettibone rose to fame and considerable notoriety by reproducing the emerging masterpieces of his contemporaries on a pocket-size scale, siphoning their connotations of fame and luxury, distilling them in dimensions that were pointedly diminutive. Pettibone can be understood as a champion of the Duchampian readymade and a crucial precursor to the appropriation artists of the 1980s, such as Sherrie Levine and Richard Prince. I love how this work balances so many powerful forces in hardly more than a square inch! #FirstOpen #pettibone
