Photo by @jimrichardsonng // Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah was my handpicked location because it was the first dark-sky park in the United States and was working hard to maintain the beauty of the night sky. This pretty much assured that I could see the splendor of the Milky Way. It was quite a sight on a perfectly still night out on the Colorado Plateau, with the ancient geology of the Owachomo Bridge framing our galaxy. Sometimes I like to ask kids if they’d like to see what it would look like if we lived inside a galaxy. Then I show them this picture and tell them that we do live inside a galaxy. My assistant and I worked frantically for two hours beginning at about 2 a.m., when the Milky Way rose above the horizon. During that time, he hid beneath that bush on the right with a flashlight, lighting up the arch, during 60- to 90-second exposures. (We got a lot of them wrong.) By 4 a.m., the coming dawn was already overpowering the Milky Way and we were done for the night. It was a great night, thinking about my humble place in a vast universe.
