Photo by @jimrichardsonng // The Bonneville Salt Flats have always fascinated me, ever since my days as a boy, reading about British racing legend John Cobb. In 1947, Cobb set a world speed record here, driving almost 400mph. Moisture makes the salt expand and push up the otherworldly patterns. I was there on this night to see how far the lights of Salt Lake City could reach out over the barren landscape. That glow on the horizon is the city, about 114 miles away. For the technically minded, I lit the salt ridges from a low angle with a small flashlight. It’s a fiercely lonely place at night, made more eerie by the hum of distant traffic on the Interstate highway.
