Photo by @jimrichardsonng // The Hebrides story was one of my favorites because these Scottish islands have some really bizarre geology. The Storr on the Isle of Skye is a good example. I scrambled up there in the morning to be in place when the first light caught craggy spires of the Old Man of Storr in what is known as the Sanctuary—those pinnacles that jut up out of the earth like fangs. They are the stubborn remnants of an ancient landslip that swept the whole mountainside down into the sea long ago. Off in the distance, you can see the rugged Cuillins—the mountains at the south end of Skye. It was a cold, gray morning when I started up the hill, and I wondered if I should just go back and take a nap. But when the light broke through it was pretty glorious, so I guess I did the right thing. You can generally trust that the planet has a few surprises left for you.
