Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety This image was captured at the first fox earth that I ever found, and one that I happened upon by chance. I was actually on my way up to my badger site when I first noticed some movement at the bottom of a field that I was passing. Backing up I got my binoculars out and could see several fox cubs playing about and they were already quite large. The landowner wasn’t the easiest person to deal with and I’d never tell anyone the location of some foxes so I asked him if I could set up a hide to try and photograph some ‘rabbits’. After much back and forth I eventually got permission and I was able to set up a hide out of view of the road. It was a fantastic learning curve and it was a pertinent reminder to me that it’s not always just a case of finding foxes but rather finding them in the right location. This wasn’t the right location as the topography and limitations of the site mean that the sun rose at about a 90⁰ angle to the hide which with the angular shape of foxes ears meant that it was that much more difficult to capture nicely lit images of them. As they were already quite large as well I only had a few successful visits but I’ll never forget the feeling of excitement and elation to be able to be this close to wild foxes, and to be getting any images at all. In this image the fox is actually in an area of shadow with the sunlit field behind him but I like the colours and the fact that the fox is interested in what lies beyond my hide, up toward where the road and the people could be found. Ever since, whenever I’ve gone to see my badgers I’ve always glanced hopefully down to where these foxes lived, hoping that one day I’ll see another generation playing outside their earth again but to date this has yet to happen.
