Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Red kite in a blizzard - When and if winter arrives it will depend on its length and severity as to how I choose to work. If only a day or two of snow is forecast then I will work only with guaranteed species as I'd rather get a beautiful image of a familiar species such as mallard, coot or swan than risk the only few days chasing something more exotic and less certain. If the forecast is for months of snow then I'd be happy to invest the time and this year I'd probably be tempted to go for some of my local foxes looking beautiful in their woolly winter coats. In previous years when I've been over in Mid Wales visiting family one of the best spots for guaranteed subjects is Gigrin farm, though it can be tricky to get to in snowy weather. The daily feeding of the kites there is a breath-taking sight, especially in falling snow and it's the perfect place to hone one’s birds in flight skills. Yet again, in overcast and consistent light, and with a consistent fall of light on the kites I shoot always on manual exposure as the kites in one moment will be flying in front of bright white fields and in other moments, such as this, in front of dark trees and bushes. Shoot on aperture priority and your exposures will vary wildly and inaccurately but shoot on manual, but keep checking your histogram and your results will be consistently successful.
