Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Bengal tiger close up - This is another forgotten image from my recent rummage through some old tiger files. It was captured during my first visit to Bandhavgarh National Park in India soon after my begrudging move to digital. I was shooting at the time on a Nikon D2x with a 500mm F4 lens, giving an effective focal length of about 720mm which is fine right up until the time that a curious tiger passes just few feet away from our doorless, windowless, windscreenless jeep! At that moment my only concern was to try and keep in frame the most interesting and intense part of the tiger, that is its eye, and to concentrate my composition by excluding any extraneous vegetation or anything that might detract from the tigers stunning coat. It is in the dappled and constantly changing light of the forest that I am most likely to shoot on aperture priority as such inconsistent and unpredictable light makes shooting in manual an impossibility, for me at least. I like this image because of the intensity of the tigers stare and that for that particular moment in its life his attention was focussed solely on me, an instant for which I feel both privileged and immensely grateful given the bewildering beauty of these astonishing creatures.
