It was this mission that took me to Belize, and into the company of the Guatemalan Black Howler Monkeys. Known as “baboons” by the English-speaking Belizeans, these monkeys are increasingly rare, now largely restricted to just a handful of protected areas. One of these is the Community Baboon Sanctuary where, nearly 30 years ago, local farmers agreed to save patches of forest around their land, creating vital feeding corridors for these arboreal primates. It has been, by any measure, a resounding success, one given emphasis by the coarse roars that greet every sunrise in the forests of this corner of Belize. #monkeys #Belize #howlers #communitybaboonsanctuary #endangered #hungry
