Photo by @andyparkinsonphoto // Northern gannet detail - This image was captured whilst working #onassignment for @natgeo at Hermaness National Nature Reserve on the northernmost tip of the Shetland Islands. I had decided to focus on trying to capture some of the more elegant details of these striking birds, illustrating some of their rarely displayed moments of calm. When using backlighting there is always a much greater degree of latitude that one can use regarding exposure, freeing the photographer to interpret the scene how he/she chooses, as opposed to front lighting where the exposure is generally either correct or not. I decided to sacrifice a small amount of detail on the fringes of the birds' plumage in order to reveal critical detail in its face and then it was simply a matter of waiting for the right moment to photograph the preening bird. I had always previously overlooked this image until it was chosen from among countless others as the opening image in my 9th BBC Wildlife feature, published just a few months after the story was published in @natgeo. If you'd like to experience these stunning birds for yourself, in the most sensational locations, then there remains just a couple of places left on my photo tour to the Shetland Islands next July.
