Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety I mentioned a couple of days ago that the location in which you seek to photograph is absolutely vital. The qualities and limits of the location determine just how easy, or how difficult capturing images of certain species can be. I know for example of photographers in Scotland and Norfolk who have great sites for brown hares where they photograph primarily from their cars and this seems to me the easiest and most comfortable way to work, especially if the topography of the site, and the sheer number of hares means that you’re able to create the feeling of shooting at eye level even when shooting from a vehicle. At my site I have no such luxury and as such in all of the thousands of hours of photographing brown hares this is the best example that I have of brown hares boxing. The challenge of capturing this aspect of behaviour is that it often comes at the mid-point of a chase, a chase which can go on for hundreds of metres and through multiple fields. Every now and again the female will pause and turn to engage the following males, batting away their advances but this of course requires so much good fortune to be in the right place at the right time. Even when this boxing unfolded they were still darting around all over the field in front of me and with my camera resting on the ground and me lying behind it the act of trying to keep these two individuals in focus and in frame was exceptionally difficult. Nevertheless I did get a little bit lucky and I was able to capture a reasonable image but there is so much room for improvement.
