It became stylized early this century as Western travelers started to discover Bali. Forms of Kecak had been practiced in ritual form as ancient Sanghyang trance dance for centuries but it was condensed and turned into entertainment by some of the first European "tourists" to come to Bali. If you go to Bali, go see it. It is impressive to watch.
