Photo by @christian_foto "Día de Muertos" is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and some Latin America countries. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.
The cult of death in Mexico is not something new; it was already practiced before the pre-Columbian times. Also, in the "Mexica" ("aztecas")calendar, you can see that during the 18 months that make up this schedule, there were at least six festivities dedicated to the dead ones. Later, the Christian missionaries from the colonial times partly accepted the traditions of the ancient Mesoamerican cultures, fusing them with the European traditions, to introduce Christianity among them. There are records of these celebrations in the Mexica, Maya, Purépecha and Totonaca cultures. The rituals that celebrate the life of the ancestors are developed in these civilizations before the pre-Columbian times. Among the pre-hispanic cultures, it was common to conserve the skulls as trophies and show them during the rituals, symbolizing death and rebirth.
