Nawang Thinle Palper bestowing a kata scarf on @davidlama_official before our adventure. Nawang Thinle Palper is six years old and is the 3rd Thame Lama. The second, Nawang Glayzen, passed away four years ago. Two years ago the Khumbu Buddhist community sought his reincarnation. This involves identifying artifacts from the previous Lama. He was living in Jorsalle with his parents. The news was warmly received and celebrated community wide. Two years ago he moved to the Thame gompa and monastery to begin his education. We interrupted his studies for a puja (blessing) for safe travels on Lunag Ri, a peak at the head of the valley. His tutor looks on as Nawang Thinle preforms an act of kindness that will define his life. ??????? There were six boys in the monastery school. They start school at 6am and continue till 8 pm. Watching them practice Tibetan calligraphy, looking at the science books in their library and learning that they are following the Mars rover was pretty cool. We left humbled and instilled with a sense of calm.
