This isn't a post about my family, our outdoor community or some of the products that make my life comfortable and adventurous. It is a post about humanity and how we are all connected. ??? This morning I used my phone to locate a coffee shop, one that was open at 5 AM. The 461 feet this compact marvel of technology mapped out was uneventful. I arrived as Eric opened the door. As he prepared a triple espresso and filled my coffee bottle I asked about the person I saw when I walked into the store. "She's a regular" replied Eric. Doubtful that she is building loyalty points with her smart phone app, I asked a little further. "She is very quiet" was Eric's observation. ? I added a breakfast sandwich and a banana to my purchase, went outside and gave the lady a welcoming start to the day. She was radiant. Her smile started my day off on a positive note. ? When she thanked me I realized she was deaf. Her smile said it all. Here we were, two random people, living out our existence. Connected for a moment. ✌️️ ??Sleeping on a side of mountain has taught me to have empathy for those less fortunate. As alpinists we "celebrate" how much self imposed hardship we can endure. Yet there are fellow humans who have no or little choice but to suffer. For these people it is my intention to treat them with dignity. Does a little food and kindness keep them from working? My guess is the homeless would much rather be anywhere than where they are. They want to work. Recognizing them and sharing a little kindness is a small action towards lessening pain and suffering. ?? This isn't meant to be humble brag or some sort of societal coercion. It's about 15 meaningful minutes. It is a chance for me to share what I believe in and encourage my fellow humans to reach out with a smile. Smiles cost nothing. Smiles make our communities vibrant. And smiles are healthy. #??⚓️
