Dendrosenecio kilimanjari (common name Giant Groundsel or Giant Senecio) is one of many fascinating plants on Africa's tallest mountain. These trees can reach 3 meters in height. The big branches form approximately 25 years apart, which allows us to estimate the age of each tree.
The more extreme an environment is the greater the morphological adaptation is. The high alpine of East Africa is an example of this. The rosette folds together at night to protect the shoot apex from extreme temperatures. These sub species have evolved over the past one million years. The Giant Groundsel has well established roots!
The shape reminds one of giant cacti, yet the trunk appears to be very solid. Neat stuff.
