Sudanese migrants played chess yesterday at the migrant camp known as the “Jungle” in the French port of #Calais. As the government set in motion a plan to clear the sprawling camp, hundreds of migrants — mostly young men from Africa or Afghanistan — lined up in the cold for buses to take them to temporary housing all over France. Some had suitcases; others simply walked out of the camp empty-handed. The squalid camp has become a symbol of Europe’s faltering efforts to handle its migration crisis. Before yesterdays operation, the camp’s population was 6,000 to 8,000. Much of that population appeared to be as anxious to be rid of the camp as the government was to clear it. Although some of the communities hosting these 451 reception centers have been demonstrating against their arrival in recent weeks, the migrants don’t know that.
