Welcome to Swan Lake, an oasis in China’s Tengger #Desert. The family that runs a small tourist park here charges a $4.50 entrance fee. Visitors also rent camels and dune buggies, and they can pay to eat in the round Mongolian tents, called gers. But the oasis, which is the main attraction, is shrinking. So are others like it in the #Tengger. Local governments in desert regions in China began relocating people away from the encroaching sands decades ago. Since then, storms of wind-driven sand have become increasingly frequent and intense, reaching Beijing and other large cities. “We dread the sandstorms,” said Du Jinping, who lives at Swan Lake with her family. Chinese officials gave them a new home in a village about 6 miles away. To get them to move and sell off their herd of more than 70 sheep, 30 cows and 8 camels, the officials have offered an annual subsidy equivalent to $1,500 for Jinping and her husband, and $1,200 for a grandmother who lives with them. @joshhaner took this #dronevideo while visiting the family in the #TenggerDesert.
