This is 4-year-old Liu Jiali. Jiali lives in the Tengger Desert, on the southern edge of the massive Gobi Desert, not far from major Chinese cities like Beijing. The #Tengger is growing. And as it does so, it’s merging with 2 other deserts, forming a vast sea of sand that could become uninhabitable. The government has relocated about 30,000 “ecological migrants” in this area, all because of #desertification. Jiali and her family were given a new home in a village about 6 miles from Swan Lake, the oasis where they run a tourist park. Jiali’s mother said the family would live in the new village in the winter but return to Swan Lake in the summer. But the oasis, which is the main attraction, is shrinking. Nearly 20% of China is #desert, and drought across the northern region is getting worse. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @joshhaner and the reporter Edward Wong visited the #Tengger Desert, where @joshhaner made this #dronevideo. We’ll share more scenes like this later today.
