Zadie Smith’s new novel, “Swing Time,” is her first novel written in the first person. “I was always a bit contemptuous of the first person,” Zadie told Jeffrey Eugenides in an interview for @tmagazine’s #tgreats issue. “I was stupid about it. I thought it wouldn’t allow me to write about other people. But, in fact, it allows you to do it in a really interesting way.” Once she stopped feeling self-conscious about writing in the first person, the novel moved quickly. One more thing that helped make her write faster: therapy. “I’ve always felt very cringe-y about myself,” Zadie said. “Fiction is a useful way of getting around it or disguising oneself one way or another.” She added: “I used to sit in front of the computer and have a very tough time writing, and I just noticed, once I was in therapy, I didn’t find it so difficult to write.” The photographer @jackie_nickerson took this portrait of #ZadieSmith.
