#Regram from @nytarchives ?On October 19, 1960, the United States imposed a far-reaching embargo on exports to Cuba. The U.S. made the decision “reluctantly,” according to an article published #onthisday that year, to “defend the legitimate economic interests of the people of this country against the discriminatory, aggressive and injurious economic policies of the Castro regime.” The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Jack Manning took this photo 4 years later, at the H. Upmann Cigar Factory in Havana during one of his first @ニューヨーク・タイムズ assignments. Jack traveled to Cuba with the reporter Dick Eder to work on a series of articles about the country. They spent weeks in Cuba, hoping to interview Fidel Castro. Ultimately, Jack ran into Castro at a cocktail party. With nothing to lose, he told Castro in Spanish, “Commandante, I have a problem.” He continued, “Commandante, you promised The New York Times an exclusive interview 2 weeks ago. We have to leave Havana in 2 days without the interview. What are we going to tell our editor?” Jack got the interview, as well as his pictures. We’ll share more from his Cuba series in the future. #tbt
