You can’t exactly call William Eggleston a fan of photography. “Oh, half of what’s out there is worthless,” he told the writer @augustenburroughs. “The only pictures I like are the ones I’ve taken.” At 77, #Eggleston has been called a legend, an icon and “the godfather of color photography.” For @tmagazine’s #tgreats issue, @augustenburroughs spent a day with the self-taught photographer. “Eggleston’s images can trick you if you’re not careful,” he wrote. “You have to look at them, then you have to look again and then keep looking until the reason he took the picture kind of clicks in your chest.” Talking about them is different. “It’s tricky,” Eggleston said. “Words and pictures don’t — they’re like 2 different animals. They don’t particularly like each other.” Near the end of their day together, @augustenburroughs asked Eggleston if he was a genius.
