The ravages of war invade memories and landscapes. In Afghanistan, a country torn by decades of conflict, these “memories” left by the enemy are ubiquitous. The Soviet Army, which was defeated by the Afghan resistance, left the country in 1989. Ever since, rusty tanks have been part of the landscape. They are often reused for the daily needs of the population – here for a bridge, there for a children’s playground, or even to dry hay. As part of the booty of war, they remain as symbols that, on the scale of the long history of humanity, even the greatest empires ultimately crumble into the dust.
