Photo by @andyparkinsonphoto @thephotosociety | Badger in a pine forest – There is a badger in there, honestly! Last summer I did a fair bit of work with my local badgers, at a site which I hadn’t worked at in the previous 5 years. My sabbatical from the site proved itself extremely valuable and I was both astonished, and I must admit a little disappointed that such a vast array of obvious images presented themselves, images which I’d obviously been blind to for all the years I’d worked the site previously. In previous years my amateurishly one-dimensional approach seemed to be to get as close as possible, with as big a lens as possible and it’s fair to say that the resulting images reflected accurately on the creativity of my approach! Lots of badger portraits, not a lot else! Last year however, and this year I’ve not only moved about 15-20 metres further away but I’ve also been shooting almost exclusively on my 200-400mm or my 80-200mm. Admittedly my ‘small in the frame’ work did perhaps get a little too small, an aspect that my wife @parkinson_claire was all too keen to point out, but photography is always about experimenting, learning and adjusting where appropriate. In this image, and with a great many others, I did get a little obsessed about the quality of light on the trees, and the exquisite nature of the trees when used as a backdrop. Sometimes it worked when the badger was in a pool of sunlight, though I had to underexpose the image a lot more, but here it seems to work ok with the badger in shade. These acorns of ideas that I discovered last year were ideas that I was keen to explore in greater depth this year but unfortunately a decidedly dodgy UK summer put something of a dampener on that. Nevertheless I continued to work with a wide variety of lenses and whilst I didn’t get as many opportunities as I’d hoped for I was still able to develop and improve on some ideas. For now however here is one of last years’ efforts.
