Shana Tovah! #RoshHashana, the Jewish New Year, began at sunset on Sunday night and continues until sundown today. New York City has the largest Jewish population outside Israel, and many New Yorkers are celebrating the holiday — a time of reflection, repentance and resolutions. Yesterday, the photographer Joshua Bright took this photo of an observant resident of South Williamsburg conducting the ceremony of #tashlich, the rite of atonement to mark the beginning of the Jewish New Year. The ritual involves tossing bits of bread into a moving body of water — the East River, in this case.
