'Forager for Plankton' dates from a seminal moment in the American-Italian artist Salvatore Scarpitta’s noteworthy career, his first solo show at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York in 1958. Made of crimson bandages weighed down by sand and resin, the present work is a masterful example from the artist’s pioneering series of 'torn' paintings.
