M.I.A’s new LP, “AIM,” is not only brighter and more accessible in sound than some of her recent releases, but also downright hopeful. “Rather than just complaining all the time about what’s wrong, I wanted to say, ‘This is what can be right.’ ” said the sparkplug rapper and singer. M.I.A. (@M.I.A.) moved to London from Sri Lanka as a child amid civil war. Last year, hoping to make a film about refugees, she came away instead with a music video, “Borders,” which was set in camps and on overcrowded boats. The video was released in November, but @M.I.A. found the promotion to be lacking. Soon after, though, she went through a breakup, and “suddenly I had more time to devote to a project,” she said. That project, “AIM,” comes out on Friday. @allisonsarahjoyce photographed @M.I.A. in Mumbai, India.
