Over a career spanning nearly 50 years, Werner Herzog has managed to pivot from outrageous and eccentric narrative films to poignant and poetic documentaries. Up next: the internet, or what the 73-year-old calls “the thing.” Werner isn’t a complete neophyte, though. He sporadically uses Google Maps and email. He just doesn’t have a cellphone or use social networks. The German filmmaker believes “the internet has its glorious side,” but he’s tentative. “I think we should start to develop deep questions of what we are doing here with the internet and what the internet is doing on its own,” he said. “Nobody has a clue.” His new documentary, “Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World,” traces the internet’s rise from its bewildering inception in the late 1960s and offers postulations about its future. @jokemichaels photographed #WernerHerzog while on #nytassignment.
