At least 44 people died over the weekend in landslides in the Mexican states of Puebla and Veracruz amid torrential rainstorms from Tropical Storm Earl, officials said. In just 5 hours, some places were drenched with the equivalent of a month’s worth of rain. The municipality of Huauchinango in the north was hit especially hard: At least 25 residents were killed, 200 buildings were damaged or destroyed and about 1,400 people were driven from their homes. Much of the damage and death in the municipality was concentrated in Xaltepec, a farming village that sits below several steep mountain slopes. @kirstenluce took this photo of the aftermath of the storm inside one Xaltepec home. 8 people died as the house and the one beside it were destroyed.
