@jeffswensen photographed Duffy Pendergast and his 16-year-old daughter, Allison, rewiring a home in #SlavicVillage while on #nytassignment in Cleveland earlier this month. At its peak, about 70,000 people lived in Slavic Village, a historically bustling center for Czech and Polish immigrants located about 20 minutes south of downtown Cleveland. Today, the population is roughly 23,000, and many homes are boarded up. The neighborhood is so poor that every public school student qualifies for federal lunch assistance. The plight of America’s cities, like Cleveland, host of the @gopconvention, have been little discussed in the 2016 presidential campaign.
