Photo by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety This is an image from my ongoing work with mute swans. I had noticed that at the end of the day the mute swan cygnets would often clamber on to a weir to feed on the algae that grew on it, often preening and shaking themselves dry afterwards. I also knew that their fluffy feathers would work perfectly with backlighting, especially as I knew that I could use a distant shadowed forest as a backdrop. In these situations it’s also important to ensure that this quite dramatic effect is created solely in camera, as it’s very easy to achieve, not by some over-zealous ham-fisted contrast maximising in Photoshop! Although I always shoot in Manual mode in these high-contrast/consistent light situations for those who might be interested you’d need to be in the range of -2 to -3 EV is you’re using aperture priority. The important thing to remember is to expose solely for the highlights and, as opposed to front lighting, with backlighting there is a lot of latitude. I wanted the blacks to be very black and containing no detail so I was probably closer to -3 EV. Because of the location of the lake where these swans live they are largely fed, depressingly, on a diet of the very lowest grade white bread. As such, in order to achieve this image within the limited window of time in which I wanted to work, I placed a small amount of corn on the weir, both so that the swans were in the right place at the right time but also so that they got some much needed, and appropriate nutrition. Ordinarily with my swan photography I don’t feed them as loads of other birds crowd in and it all gets too busy and cluttered. That being said I do feed them when I’m not photographing just so that I know that they are getting something useful to eat.
