It is remarkable in many ways, but most of all for it’s bizarre breeding strategy. Shunning the creation of any nest, Maleos lay a single enormous egg in the hot beach sand, or in geothermally-heated soil, and then abandon them. 70 days later, the Maleo chick hatches out of the egg in utter darkness, digs its way to the surface at night - and then, already fully-feathered, flies up to the safety of the treetops - although they have never seen a tree before. This image is a female, laying her egg deep in the sand. I have, for some years, been involved with the Alliance for Tompotika Conservation, a small non-profit whose mission is to save the endangered Maleo from extinction.
