The family of Araselis Rodriguez and Nestor Daniel Reina sat outside their home after skipping dinner one night last week. Although the couple had spent spent hours searching, they couldn’t find any affordable food for their 4 small children. On the day @meridithkohut photographed them in Cumaná, Venezuela, they had eaten bread for breakfast and, for lunch, soup made from fish that Nestor had managed to catch. In their refrigerator by dinnertime: 2 limes and several bottles of water. This family is not alone: #Venezuela is convulsing from hunger. Hundreds of people in Cumaná marched on a supermarket in recent days, screaming for food. They snatched water, flour, cornmeal, salt, sugar, potatoes, anything they could find, leaving behind only broken freezers and overturned shelves. And they showed that even in a country with the largest oil reserves in the world, it’s possible for people to riot because there is not enough food.
