I have grown up near the ocean most of my life and have always been amazed by its untamed beauty and its diverse marine wildlife. Today is World Oceans Day, a day to honour and celebrate healthy oceans and planned and already protected marine parks all over the world. It’s also time to be aware of just how fragile marine ecosystems are. We know of the mass coral bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef, especially north of what once was my home town, Cairns, Australia. I have snorkelled in these coral wonderlands many times and still cannot fathom that more than 80% of the coral is affected by bleaching and almost a quarter dead or may never fully recover… (http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/jun/07/the-great-barrier-reef-a-catastrophe-laid-bare) Another concern near my homeland is the BP drilling plan in the Great Australian Bight, a wild part of the ocean off the central and western portions of the southern coastline of mainland Australia. "The Great Australian Bight is rich in beauty and biodiversity, teeming with life and boasting the worlds’ most significant southern right whale nursery, as well as humpback, sperm, blue and beaked whales. It is also Australia's most important sea lion nursery and supports orcas, great white sharks, southern blue fin tuna and other fish down to the small pelagic. In response to BP's plans to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight, in waters deeper and rougher than the Deepwater Horizon disaster, Sea Shepherd launchedOperation Jeedara.” (Sea Shepherd) Australia's natural wonders could be devastated by another BP oil spill, places like Kangaroo Island, Neptune Islands, Pearson Island, Isles of St Francis, Fowlers Bay, Nuyts Reef, Head of the Bight and of course the rich diversity of life in Bremer Canyon are seriously at risk if these plans go ahead and BP was to exploit oil in these regions. Enormous resources are needed to save our oceans. Let’s be pro-active and support all attempts to save and oppose any threats to our oceans! #worldoceansday #lovetheoceans #fightforthereef ✨✨??????????✨✨ Photo ? @morganmaassen
