Hey, do you buy free range eggs?
I've been based predominantly in Europe this year and was genuinely surprised that the vast majority of restaurants, cafes and markets were supporting battery hen farming by using their eggs.
I feel factory farming and its far-reaching effects on the animals, environment and public health is such an important issue.
The vast majority of egg laying hens are afforded of 67 square inches of cage space, (less space than a single sheet of letter sized paper), they are often confined to cages with 5/6 other hens and suffering highly abusive handling.
Factory farming systems change with public opposition and by demanding the fair, kinder way.
We can all help with generating conversations & raising consciousness, maybe next time you eat breakfast at a yummy café, ask if the eggs are free range? Or check out films like 'Earthlings' or 'Farm to Fridge'. You may find the imagery shockingly arresting but it is high time we face the harsher realities so we can consciously choose options that we believe in.
Let's support cafés, restaurants and markets that source their eggs and food locally, from farms where animals are treated with compassion and have space to live a fair life.
