The Altai Mountains is the birthplace of the Turkic tribes which, over the course of millennia, spread out towards the west. The last two centuries saw the two neighboring great powers divide the vast steppes of Central Asia among them. Russia, over the course of its conquest of the southeast region, invaded Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. China advanced to the west, annexing Eastern Turkestan, the land of the Uighurs, along with other tribes. They named the region Xinjiang, which means “new frontiers.” These lands were conquered by Russia and China at the price of tortured intellectuals, and exiled or killed civil servants. While the collapse of the Russian Empire liberated the five countries of the south, Eastern Turkestan remained under Chinese occupation, despite the efforts of independence movements. The Kazakhs, who live in the Altai mountains, pursue their transhumance, braving the will of the central government to make these nomads sedentary the better to control them. They try to tempt them with the comforts of modernity such as electricity and the construction of schools. Despite it all, in the depths of the valleys, nestled among the great stretches of grass, it is not unusual to come upon a teacher who has ridden over on a yak to provide lessons to children sagely seated before their notebooks, sitting open on large stones which serve as desks, for lack of trees.
