Photo by: Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Just after breakfast at a lodge high on a mountainside at the base of the violent WWI mountaintop battlefield of Tete de Faux in the Vosges Mountains of Southern Alsace. On the horizon is Germany’s Black Forest and the city of Basel, Switzerland, which draws art lovers from around the world to the annual Art Basel. This beautiful WWI German chapel and hillside cemetery are a ten minute walk from where I sit hidden in an obscure part of the forest. German soldiers built this with a sense of permanence. They didn’t imagine that Germany would be defeated and that this land would once again become French soil. It’s doubtful that the families of the men buried here know about this place a hundred years on. The tranquility and sacredness one feels here are dreamlike . . . a trace of the vanquished warriors buried here whose cause was defeated but whose noble sacrifice is still honored by the dignity of a long forgotten cemetery in an obscure mountain forest.
