Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety The consequences of our warming climate are many and varied. Here in the UK we are seeing dramatically reduced winters with long periods of rain now replacing what was once snow. High in the Scottish mountains the effects are magnified as a number of species depend on the presence of snow for their very survival. One of these is the UK’s only native hare species, the mountain hare. Already under devastating pressure from those that consider killing to be sport these stunning creatures are being slaughtered in their hundreds, all so that a privileged yet despicable minority can rejoice in the unbridled horror of killing animals for pleasure. Sadly that is not the only challenge that these remarkable creatures face. An evolutionary adaptation, that has served them well for millennia, is now causing them untold harm as they struggle to adapt quickly enough to our rapidly changing climate. This adaptation is their ability to turn white in winter, to blend seamlessly with their snow-covered environment and to avoid the unwanted attentions of their primary predator, the golden eagle. These are uncertain times for the mountain hare and whilst lying low might not be the best strategy for survival it seems that it’s the only one they’ve got for now!
