female Ruby-throated Hummingbird
(Archilochus colubris) It is the most common hummingbird seen east of the Mississippi River in North America. They are migratory birds, spending most of the winter in southern Mexico, Central America and southern Florida. During Spring migration, some of these tiny birds fly non-stop over water from the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico across the Gulf of Mexico (800 km/500 mi) arriving first in Florida and Louisiana. Researchers have discovered that these tiny birds can double their fat mass by approximately one gram in preparation for their Gulf crossing, then expend the entire calorie reserve from fat during the 20-hour non-stop crossing when food and water are unavailable. Ruby -throated hummingbirds are solitary. Adults of this species are not social, other than during courtship (which lasts a few minutes); the female also cares for her offspring. They migrate as far north as Ontario Canada, and the oldest known ruby-throated hummingbird to be banded was 9 years and 1 month of age.
