In a meeting today, I got called an environmentalist, and at first, I was taken aback because I had never thought of myself as one.
When we think of labels (and this is why I HATE labels), we always think of the most staunch and devoted practices associated with those stereotypes. Example, people associate healthy eating with restrictions and hunger or they assume that in order to incorporate plant based into their diets, they need to go full blown vegan. (NO!) Or in this case, that environmentalists don't own cars and plant trees in their free time.
Because of these assumptions, we tend to steer away from making positive changes or attempting to make a difference because we associate those things with extremism.
In reality, being an environmentalist just means you have concern for the wellbeing and protection of the planet. It means advocating change, no matter how big or small, in an effort or educate and spread awareness.
When I examine the posts on my social media and the causes that speak to me, I can proudly say that I am an environmentalist. Because I care. Because I want you to care. Because I want to use my influence and voice to educate people on the realities of our choices and that its time for us to be accountable.
We don't have to go around planting trees-(although, we should totally get a group together and do that because deforestation is OUT of control), but by making small changes, with the products we use in our homes and the brands we support, we can begin to make a difference in the world.
