The physiologist Yannis Pitsiladis wants to redefine the limits of human endurance by training a man to run a marathon in less than 2 hours. A 1:59:59 marathon would require a searing pace of 4 minutes 34 seconds per mile, 7 seconds faster than the pace of the current world record. “I want to beat those on drugs,” Yannis said, adding: “I want to say, in a sense, yes, drugs have been taken, but not by my athletes, and I’ve just smashed the 2-hour barrier without them.” The photographer @urielsinai took this photo of Yannis carrying the tools he needs to conduct a VO2max test — a measure of your body’s ability to take in and utilize oxygen — to a hotel room in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
