In 2014, Dennis Kimetto of Kenya set the world record #marathon time, clocking in at 2 hours 2 minutes 57 seconds. Even some of the greatest marathoners doubt that breaking the 2-hour barrier is possible. Could the body have enough fuel to run that far, that fast? Would the brain slow the legs for self-preservation? The scientist Yannis Pitsiladi is on a quest to find out. His Sub2 Project, as it’s called, is an attempt to redefine the limits of human endurance without the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Sub2 experts want to use data to challenge everything people thought they knew about distance running — how to train and even whether to wear shoes. @urielsinai took this photo of Yannis preparing to administer a VO2max test — which measures your body’s ability to take in and utilize oxygen — on 14-year-old Chala Tulu while on assignment for @nytimessports in Bekoji, Ethiopia. #nytweekender
