Photo by: Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Early in WWI, 450 courageous French soldiers at Fort de Troyon stood against a much larger German force that ordered their surrender. The fate of the strategic French town of Verdun hung in the balance. They were the only hope for preventing the German army from placing a complete stranglehold around Verdun. This fateful victory would eventually lead to the battle of Verdun, a 9 month conflagration that led to an estimated 750,000 casualties. In 1918, an American military hospital was established at Fort de Troyon. An estimated 800 Americans died here from their injuries.
