Kazakh horsemen playing Kokpar in the Mangystau region of Kazakhstan. This ancient Central Asian sport has horse-mounted players attempting to drag a goat or calf carcass toward a goal. Banned during the Soviet era, today Kokpar is Kazakhstan's national sport, reviving a tradition that began in the 10th century.
Throughout Central Asia, Kokpar is known by many names - Buzkashi, Kupkari and Ulak Tartysh.
I'm also on #Snapchat @stanmeyer, sharing films of the making of this story for Nat Geo.
Additionally, we have taken over National Geographic's Snapchat feed (@ナショナルジオグラフィック). Follow both feeds for a deeply layered social media experience of how National Geographic stories are created.
All my best,
