Bacon famously destroyed the portrait soon after its completion, after Beaton was horrified by the end result: "The face...was disintegrating before your eyes... A swollen mass of raw meat and fatty tissues... The nose spread in many directions like a polyp... The mouth looked like a painful boil about to burst".
