Mei, 16, looked out from a window at home in her village in southeastern China. When the photographer @muyi_xiao met Mei in 2014, the teenager was 9 months pregnant and had been married to her 17-year-old husband, Jian, for a year. When she traveled to small cities and towns in southeastern China, @muyi_xiao found the practice of teenage marriage to be widespread. Some of the girls she met were getting married at 14. But this was not a tale of arranged marriages to older men. “Usually, they got together from love,” she said.
