Over the course of 4 months, 97,100 metric tons of methane quietly leaked out of a single well into California’s sky, creating the largest methane leak in U.S. history. Local media began taking notice when residents complained of suffocating gas fumes. Scientists later learned that the leak — at a well in the Southern California Gas Company’s Aliso Canyon storage facility — was producing twice the emissions of all of the power plants, oil and gas facilities, airports, smoke stacks and tailpipes in greater Los Angeles combined. “If you compare the Aliso Canyon leak to other leaks,” said Stephen Conley, an atmospheric scientist, “it’s top dog. It’s a monster. It throws off L.A.’s emissions for the year.” While residents experienced bloody noses and blurred vision, California health officials believe there will be no long-term health effects. But that's not the case for the atmosphere.
